Frontispiece is black and white photo entitled: “In the region of our enemies of Alimit.” On publishers page is a paste-in listing the “Errata” on this first printing. The author talks about his experiences while teaching school in the pagan districts of Northern Luzon. Barton, while not yet a trained ethnologist, was a gifted observer of native peoples and wrote extensively on Philippine pagan groups. Native custom which underlies their law is discussed in some detail, so is Ifugao religion at length. Short sections on the Kalinga and Bontoc and lengthy description of his experiences among the Ifugao.
