“The Ransom of Manila; or, England’s Ally” refers to a historical event during the Seven Years’ War where British forces captured the Spanish city of Manila in the Philippines (1762-64) and demanded a large ransom payment from the Spanish authorities to avoid further plundering and destruction. Though the Spanish initially agreed to pay the ransom of four million Spanish silver dollar, they ultimately only paid a fraction of the amount before the British were forced to withdraw due to the terms of the Treaty of Paris ending the war.
