From 1838 to 1842, Lt. Charles Wilkes commanded the Great first U.S. Exploring Sea Expedition, the government-sponsored mission to gather scientific data about the Pacific Ocean & establish a foothold and territorial claims in the Pacific and in the process resulted in the first US-American circumnavigation. The three ships involved were the ‘Vincennes’, the ‘Porpoise’, & the ‘Peacock’ which sailed along & surveyed the Northwest American coast & his exploring parties penetrated into the interior of many points. They passed through the Southern Philippines for which the publication included several maps and views.
