Description
hand-coloured copper engraving. EXTREMELY RARE.
Superb and very important German-Austrian Jesuit rendering of the Padre Pedro Murillo de Velarde map of 1744 with a large cartouche on the upper right, depicting a crocodile and two natives with fighting cocks, and an inset map of Old Manila-Intramuros, inspired by the 1734 original vignette version, “from narratives that reached Europe between 1730-1740” [translated from frontispiece]. The publication of this map happened one year earlier than the Manila publication of the reduced-size Murillo in Manila 1749.
This map forms an important cornerstone of any Filipiniana Map collection and remains a comparatively more affordable Murillo when the book occasionally appears for sale in the world market. To find the map on its own and outside of the book happens even less often. Do not miss this opportunity as it is only the fifth time we have this map for sale in the past almost 30 years of our Gallery’s existence
