Map from an unidentified edition of Stieler’s Hand-Atlas, plate no. 58. Adolf Stieler (1775–1836) cartographer and lawyer, worked most of his life for Justus Perthes, the cartographic publishing house of world repute. Although he studied law and would serve in government for his entire career, he published many famous cartographic works. His “Hand-Atlas” was the leading German world atlas until the middle of the 20th Century.
