XVI, 608pp., green full cloth with gilded title in Chinese characters, hard cover, partially gilted foredge, 60 illustrations incl. 1 coloured frontispice, 4 maps [2 fold-out of The Malay Peninsula and Indochina]; with dedication to the Marquess of Lansdowne, then Secretary of War, and signed by the author in London on April 27, 1895; and his hand-written correction on p. 403 from Hongkong to “Canton”; new small white label on inner rear cover and exlibris of the Marquess of Lansdown on inner front cover.
EXTREMELY RARE British edition; the first edition of only 1000 copies appeared on March 18, this second edition on March 30th of the same year; with 1 chapter on Manila pp. 167-179 and 1 photo of a Manila band on p.172. The other chapters describe The British Empire in the Far East and the French, Russian, Spanish, and presence there, along with China, Korea, Japan, Siam and Malaya. COLLECTOR’S ITEM.
