hand-coloured copper engraving map from ‘Reis van Lord Macartneij naar China’ (1792/93), vol. 7; the first Dutch edition published in Amsterdam by ‘Johannes Allart, of the famous work, originally published in London: An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China.
Staunton (1737-1801) was principal secretary to Lord Macartney’s embassy to China in 1792, tasked to improve the existing commercial relations with China, a mission which failed.
