From the Preface: “Gathered in this book is a pictorial history of the City of Maynila as it commemorates the fourth centenary of its transformation into a capital. Rare maps, drawings and photographs of diverse persons and events in its long history have been incorporated by the author, a winner of the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in history. Carlos Lozada Quirino (1910-1999) was a Philippine biographer and historian. He is best known for his early biography of Jose Rizal and the Philippine Cartography. He also wrote several works on Philippine history and biographies of President Manuel Quezon and the painter Damian Domingo. In 1997 he was recognised as a National Artist of the Philippines for Historical Literature.
