William Desborough Cooley and the foundation of the Hakluyt Society 1846 in London, and named after
Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) a collector and editor of narratives of voyages and travels, by R. C. Bridges.
The purpose was the publication of primary sources of exploration and discovery expeditions.
Produced for the 150th anniversary of the Hakluyt Society, the work has a preliminary essay on the Society’s
publications, which is followed by biographical essays on important figures in the Society’s history,
including Henry Yule, Clements Markham, and R.A. Skelton, and a bibliography of the Society’s publications .
