Description
hand-coloured copper engraving. From ‘The Voyage of LaPerouse Round the World’.
This French expedition vanished without a trace after leaving Sydney in 1788 and was lost for decades until remnants were discovered on Vanikoro byCapt. Dillon years later in 1826. During his trip, LaPerouse had sent all notes, drawings, specimen and other expedition results overland back to France from the Coast of Siberia and through another ship from Sydney – hence the majority of his work reached Paris and survived to be published.
