505pp., hardbound, half-calf, with 2 folded lithograph maps. EXTREMELY RARE. José Antonio Julián Montero y Vidal was a Spanish writer, historian, geographer and politician. He held various positions in the Spanish overseas provinces of the Philippines and Cuba, and wrote extensively about them. José Montero y Vidal developed an essayistic and literary work focused on the history, geography and ethnography of the Philippines, an area in which he stood out as one of the greatest specialists of the last third of the 19th century. Several of his works were awarded at the General Exhibition of 1887 and are still a reference for literature written in Spanish in the Philippines today.
