Description
hand-coloured copper engraving. EXTREMELY RARE.
Attractive and very rare map published by Dutchman Pierre (Pieter) Mortier (1661-1711), son of a French refugee. From 1693 to 1700, he published 3 editions of the ‘Neptune Francois’. The tracks of several Pacific voyages to the Philippines are shown, just like the fictitious Island St. Jean [St. John] East of Northern Mindano. The same map was republished later by his heirs, which evolved into one of the most important publishing houses at that time: Covens & Mortier.
