EXTREMELY RARE map of the Philippines and Southeast Asia from John Hamilton Moore’s “A New and Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels … comprehending an extensive system of Geography, describing, in the most accurate manner, every place worthy of notice in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.” This map is identical with that issued by Thomas Kitchin, except for the decorative cartouche which states “By Tho s Conder 1778” instead of “By M r Kitchin”, and the added inscription atop the upper neatline “Engrav’d for Moore’s New and Compleat [sic] Collection of Voyages and Travels”.
The work was published in London in 1785 by Alexander Hogg. The work was illustrated by Thomas Conder and included depictions of Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, and North America.
John Hamilton Moore (1738-1807) was a Scottish navigation teacher and author. He wrote one of the best travel chronicles of the era in 1778 and sold it to Alexander Hogg for publication.
Thomas Conder (1747-1831) was an English engraver and bookseller. He produced a large amount of maps and charts.
